Vogue News

From controversial Vogue Hairspray to so much more, let's take a look at Vogue News this month.

Vogue Hairspray

As Gigi hadid said "I feel that as a model, I am a performer", we certainly saw this come true for Vogue's April cover video. A remake of  'Can't Stop the Beat' from the musical and movie 'Hairspray'.

Although many claim this is controversial as the storyline of 'Hairspray' is following the journey of a plus sized dancer, the choreography, costumes and videography is still absolutely incredible

Gucci's newest Creative Director

Working at Balenciaga from 2015, Demna Gvasalia is taking over at Gucci this summer.

As an artist, he pays particular attention to the streets and looks like he will bring a fresh outlook to the brand.

Best known for leather goods, he should be able to use this to his advantage as he becomes only the second non-Italian (since Tom Ford) to take over the Fashion House.

Interview

April 2025

Mona May - Costume Designer

Mona May is a costume Designer known for her work in , Clueless, Enchanted and  Never Been Kissed.

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting and getting to chat with her a few weeks ago to find out all about her career.

In your mind, what makes a great costume designer?

"This is a complex question, as artists get to be very perspective because we tell stories of humans through the clothes. I think we are kind of like detectives in a way, there's lots of detail. When you think of an actor coming onto screen without saying nay words within seconds, you know who they are. In many movies like 'Never Been Kissed' or 'House Bunny', even 'Enchanted', they change throughout like Ty from 'Clueless' she's seen as the ugly duckling then Cher changes her. Stories can also be told through historical costumes."

What was your favourite costume in the 1995 movie 'Clueless'?

"Well, Cher had over 60 different costumes but I also had to dress every extra because, at the time when we were making the movie, everybody on the streets wore grungy clothes. I had to create a whole new fashion look that wasn't really out yet. They're like my babies so it's hard to tell which one but I mean, the yellow suit is the most famous so let's go with that one"

Has there been a movie you worked on where you really wanted to keep the costume for yourself?

"I do love the Enchanted dress of Ann Adams you know, the wedding dress it was quite incredible but I also love the Evil Queen dress as well. The way it is designed and the textures and the colours, it really works and then she turns into a CGI dragon and it becomes the dragon so maybe that one, it's really the most powerful"

Are there any celebrities you want to work with?

"I have had a big chance to work with many of them I mean from, Nicole Kidman, Barry Mores, Jennifer Aniston, Alicia Silverstone and Amy Adams etc I think for me, it is more about the project and what story can I tell."

What inspired you to take this career path?

"Fashion was my first love. But then when I got to Hollywood, I started helping friends who were in film school to design their little movies. They came to me and said' hey, we are doing a school movie, can you make the clothes' and that's kinda how it started. It was so fascinating to me to really read a story and then tell the story with clothes it got me completely hooked immediately and so Clueless was such an interesting project because it married my two loves of costume design and fashion. I love working with a team and working with the director. It is a bunch of artist and we have one goal. It is exciting"

How much creative freedom do you get?

"When I get hired,I read the script and then I have a conversation with the director. I can see his vision, kind of like his big painting and you know, a lot of directors don't know a lot about fashion. They don't know A-line skirts or what an empire waist of a cap sleeve is so then, I bring in my expertise and kind of create the details. I think how can I tell the story, knowing fashion and you know, historical costume? or creating something in the future? Then I have to blend my creativity with the directors vision so I try to go under their skin and into their mind. It is a very interesting process because we also have to work with the actors and sometimes the costume won't work well with the actor so we have to be flexible. It never gets dull"

Is there a designer you get inspired by?

"Costume design is a lot broader than just fashion. It is much more artistic so it could be really anything. Travel has really inspired me from seeing how women and men are dressed around the world. Some movies don't even have any fashion elements so it's diving into a different world"
